mercury prize nominees 2016

It’s that time of the year again! The Mercury Prize 2016 nominees have just been announced and naturally we’ve been playing all the albums here in the studio.

Our favourites include the above – Radiohead (who have earned their record-breaking fifth nomination), Michael Kiwanuka and Savages who we’ve seen perform live, previous winner Anohni and David Bowie’s final album which is tipped as favourite to win.

We love them all equally in different ways so it will truly be a tough one!

We’ve been listening to a few cheeky recommendations these past few weeks and these are the albums that particularly stood out. We loved Allah-Las self-titledĀ album which was like listening to a modern day version of The Shadows – it’s got a great summer vibe so keep this one for your picnic in the park. Night Beats album ‘Who Sold My Generation’ is more upbeat and revives that psychedelic rock trend that put us in mind of Tame Impala or Unknown Mortal Orchestra – which is always a good thing! The last album ‘Come All Sufferers’ by Gabriel Bruce was dark, poetic and melancholy – think Queens of the Stone Age meets Leonard Cohen.
